The Antioch Story

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations...” (Matthew 28:19)

At the end of 2017 Kevin and his wife, Alli, both sensed God wanted to do something new with them after serving on staff in college ministry at a local church.  So, they began praying very intentionally in January of 2018 that God would make his direction clear. Over the course of the following months the Holy Spirit made things very clear. He wanted to see a church planted to reach UAB students and the wider UAB community.

In fall of 2018 they began inviting members of their sending and home church, Shades Mountain Baptist Church, to pray about joining them in this work.

In January 2019 they along with a core team of students and families were supported and sent out from their church to begin making disciples and planting Antioch. They gathered weekly in a home for worship, prayer, and training. In fall 2019, they began holding public worship gatherings. To God be the glory.

Values

KINGDOM FIRST

We are about the Kingdom of Jesus: what individuals and communities look like when King Jesus gets his way. We believe Antioch exists simply as a means to that end.

INTENTIONAL DIVERSITY

We believe cultural and socioeconomic diversity is a natural outworking of the reconciling power of the gospel. But it takes intentionality to get there.

TRANSPARENCY + MESSINESS

Jesus came to save the sick, not the well. Being honest about the real state of our lives and hearts is possible because of the cross. It is necessary to confess to find healing.

PRAYER

Prayer is fundamentally an act of humility. It says: We don’t have what it takes, but God, you do. It is the place where our weakness is filled with his strength.

GRACE + TRUTH BALANCE

Not legalism. Not license. But a balance of both grace and truth which gives room for the religious and irreligious alike to find and follow Jesus.

BELONG BEFORE BELIEVE

We believe it is important for people of all backgrounds, perspectives, ages, cultures, and beliefs to be able to “wander around the Kingdom.” We welcome everyone to explore faith in Jesus. Belong then Believe then Become.

WELCOMING CHANGE

If something isn’t working, we will break it. We don’t want anything to hinder the gospel from going forth or to keep us from being a faithful church — especially our own ideas, plans, and structures.

Beliefs

THE GOSPEL

The gospel literally means “good news.” It is the good news of of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ that provides sinners full and free deliverance from the penalty, power, and one day the presence of sin. We believe at the heart of all sound doctrine lies the cross of Jesus Christ. There we see the full expression of the love and grace of God meet the full expression of the justice and wrath of God.

DOCTRINE OF GOD

We believe in one God eternally existing as one essence and three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, each of whom is fully God, yet there is one God.

DOCTRINE OF REVELATION

God has made himself known to the world in Jesus Christ, the Scriptures, and creation.

DOCTRINE OF CREATION AND PROVIDENCE

We believe God created the world from nothing and governs all things at all times in all places.

DOCTRINE OF HUMANITY

We believe that all humanity is created in the image of God and possesses intrinsic dignity and worth.

DOCTRINE OF SIN

We believe that by his free choice man sinned against God and brought sin into the human race, fracturing all things and leaving the world in desperate need of salvation.

DOCTRINE OF SALVATION

We believe salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

DOCTRINE OF THE CHURCH

We believe the Church is the body of Christ sent into the world to shine forth for the glory of God.

DOCTRINE OF RESURRECTION AND CONSUMMATION OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD

We believe Jesus Christ is returning to the world in the future to judge the living and the dead.
